W02 - Dürer and the Magic Square

Where Art, Mathematics, and Creativity Meet

Inspired by Albrecht Dürer's famous engraving Melencolia I, this interdisciplinary workshop invites students to explore the fascinating relationship between art, mathematics, logic, and design.

Workshop Concept

Using geometric shapes, pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, and collaborative problem-solving, students discover how simple mathematical rules can generate endless creative possibilities. Through hands-on activities, they learn that mathematics is not only a tool for calculation but also a powerful source of artistic expression

Students work individually and in groups to create original compositions inspired by Dürer's Magic Square and geometric principles. As they experiment with shapes, balance, symmetry, and visual relationships, they develop critical thinking, decision-making, communication, and teamwork skills.

The workshop can be adapted to different grade levels and educational objectives. Activities may include geometry, combinatorics, pattern analysis, design principles, collaborative mural creation, and advanced mathematical exploration for older students.
